Day 03 Luang Prabang

Starting from your hotel at 8:30, we’ll drive to the Morning Market. Unlike the large grocery stores you might be familiar with back home; the food here is still produced by small farming families and villages and brought to Luang Prabang from the surrounding Northern provinces. Your guide will explain the common vegetables and fruits that are in season and buy pick up some snacks for later.

After a short walk along the street, you will arrive at Wat Mai (“New Monastery” built in 1796).  It was given its present name following the restoration undertaken in 1821 by King Manthathourat.  The most striking feature of the temple is the gilded relief panels covering the front facade. The panels tell the story of the highest incarnation of the Buddha -- Vessentara. The gilded door frames merge into the relief panel, forming what looks like a monolithic wall of gold. Next to Wat Mai temple is the National Museum which used to be the Royal Palace (Haw Kham). Your guide will help explain some information as you tour the museum. It houses the Royal throne of the Lane Xang kingdom in its original splendour,
and many other religious treasures.

After the museum you will take another ride in the Tuk Tuk to Saffron Coffee Shop, here you will learn about Lao coffee, attend to a roasting demonstration and get private tasting session (coffee appreciation) (from 1 to 1.5 hours) .  Saffron Coffee is directly traded and sustainably sourced from organic, micro coffee plots belonging to individual farming families of Khmu, Hmong, Mien, and Gasak hill tribes. Saffron promotes shadegrown coffee farming practices which help regenerate, protect, and improve natural forests. Saffron Coffee is grown and processed with methods which reduce environmental impact with waste products being reused and recycled. Gain insight into Saffron Coffee’s three passions in the production of specialty Arabica unique to northern Laos during this Tasting session. Learn the skills required in brewing coffee to optimize taste and gain a deeper appreciation of the time and effort invested into specialty coffee production. Get a glimpse of Saffron Coffee’s unique crop to cup story, expand your knowledge of Lao coffee, and refine your palate by learning to distinguish between flavour profiles of Saffron’s single origin coffees.

After lunch, we will pass by Huean Chan antique house, enjoying the sites on your way. We will then visit Wat Visoun. This temple was constructed during the reign of King Visounarat around 1520.  In 1942, it was turned into a Museum of Religious Arts, and houses collections of Buddha images and religious artefacts from the fourteenth century.

To finish our trip we will climb the steps of Phou Si hill, to the top, which is studded with many small temples and shrines. The gilded stupa at the top of the hill is built on a large rock outcropping.  An old opening in the base of the rock was sealed up to prevent vandalism. Next to the stupa is a small wiharn (chapel) for prayers. Further down the side of the hill is part of Wat Phra Buddabhat (The Buddha's Footprint Temple). From here enjoy the view of the peninsula where the Nam Khan river meets the mighty Mekong river.

Lunch at 3 Nagas, Dinner at Coconut Garden
Overnight in Luang Prabang (Service hours: 0830 - 2100)

Day04

Luang Prabang

After breakfast, we will visit the Wat Xieng Thong. This 15th century wat is the most important in Luang Prabang and one of the most important in the entire country. Until the revolution of 1975, Wat Xieng Thong was a royal temple, supported by the royal family. During the 1960s, Wat Xieng Thong was completely remodeled and redecorated, becoming the splendid temple we see today.  Walk down a few steps from the temple to the Mekong River, where you’ll board a traditional slow boat for the next part of the journey.

This majestic river runs from the Tibetan Plateau through China, Burma, Thailand, Lao PDR, Cambodia and Vietnam. It is the world's 10th longest river, with an estimated length of 4,909km. The Mekong basin is the second richest area of biodiversity in the world, exceeded only by the Amazon. The name Mekong is derived from Lao and Thai and reflects those peoples’ understanding of the Mekong as their “Mother River.” Protected by the Mother River, Laos remains one of Asia’s most unvisited and unchanged countries.

We will stop to visit the holy Tam Ting Caves (also called the Pak Ou caves), where the Nam Ou River meets the Mekong. This is a site of ancient spiritual significance, both Buddhist and animist. Within the two caves of Tam Ting are stupas, shrines, and carvings of Buddha. Over 4,000 wooden figures of Buddha, many highly ornate, stand within the natural limestone caves, testament to the skill of Lao craftsmen through the centuries.

Continuing along the river, we will visit some local villages: Ban Xang Hai where you can see rice whisky (Lou Lao) being distilled and taste the local product and Ban Xang Khong, where Lao craftspeople make saa paper from the bark of mulberry trees.

Lunch on board (with water, coffee/tea), Dinner at Tangor
Overnight in Luang Prabang (Service hours: 0830 – 2100)

Day05

Luang Prabang

We drive from Luang Prabang to the Living Lands Organic Farm where you meet the local farming guide. You are invited to interact and experience each step of the rice harvest and will see how different tools are created. The tour ends with a tasting of the traditional foods made from rice. You will have a new appreciation for rice and admiration for the people of Lao who to this day continue to harvest rice without modern machinery. The tour will continue from the Living Lands "Rice is Life" experience to the Kuang Si Waterfalls. You will have lunch at the waterfall and enjoy a short trek to the top of the falls. If you feel dventurous ask your guide to take you off the trail to the hidden pools.  If time permit on the way back visit Ock Pop Tok weaving center.
