Day 01 Fukuoka

Fukuoka Airport-(30 minutes drive) ~Dazaifu

Dazaifu Tenmangu is a large Shinto shrine set in beautiful grounds in the historic town of Dazaifu, less than an hour from Fukuoka's city center. The shrine has on-site museums, teahouses, landscaped gardens and a program of art installations.

Although the shrine was established here over 1,000 years ago, it has a thriving contemporary art program, inviting top international artists to create new pieces on-site. The gardens at the shrine are beautiful in all seasons, with cherry blossoms in spring, irises in summer and colorful leaves in autumn. Dazaifu Tenmangu is famed for plum blossoms, and around 6,000 plum trees bloom in late winter.

There are festivals throughout the year at Dazaifu Tenmangu, from a dramatic fire festival in January, to poetry composition under the plum blossoms in March, to grand parades across the city in September. The shrine is popular with students, who come here to pray for good exam results. Dazaifu Tenmangu enshrines Sugawara Michizane, a ninth century figure deified as Tenjin, the deity of learning, culture, and the arts.

The Kyushu National Museum, a short walk from Dazaifu Tenmangu, is a striking modern edifice, with exhibitions focused on Kyushu's history and interactions with Asia and Europe.

Dazaifu (60 minutes drive) ~ Hita

Hita, in the west of Oita, is at the centre of northern Kyushu. Serving as the shogun’s most important stronghold on the island, roads fanned out in all directions allowing the rapid transmission of information and dispatch of military forces to suppress any dissent. Today, Mameda-machi, the old town centre, with its ranks of period buildings retains a strong resemblance to the days when the samurai held sway. Today, the streets are frequented by visitors who come to soak up the atmosphere and relax, enjoying the many restaurants, cafes, boutique shops selling traditional and modern crafts, and the Kuncho brewery, which produces one of Oita’s top-class sakes.

Day 02 Hita - Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi - Kurokawa

Hita (45 minutes drive) - Kokonoe Yume Otsurihashi

The bridge is designed to hold 1,800 people at once, which may seem like a lot until you consider that 300,000 crossed it during the first month it was open in 2006. Views from this bridge are impressive year-round. The best time to visit is between April and early December, particularly from mid-April to May to see the lush green spring foliage, and in November for the fiery autumn colors.

Day 03 Kurokawa - Ukiha - Fukuoka Airport

Kurokawa -(90 minutes drive) ~ Ukiha

"Ukiha City", a utopia of beautiful nature and exquisite fruits! The city of Ukiha is located in southeast Fukuoka Prefecture, on the border with Oita Prefecture. Only about an hour drive from the big city of Fukuoka, it is blessed with bucolic scenes of natural beauty, including the majestic Mino Mountain Range, the fruit orchards that extend along its base, and Cho-on Falls, selected as one of Japan's top 100 water source forests. A particularly spectacular sight is the "Tsuzura Rice Terraces", which were selected as one of Japan's 100 best terraced rice fields. It has something to offer in every season, such as the flooding of the paddies in early summer and the riot of red spider lilies that bloom around their edges in autumn.
